01 / ABOUT THE PLACE

About this place

A wok tossed vigorously over a roaring burner and the fragrant steam of garlic rising across the counter are what draw many diners into Kokushin. The house specialty is garlic fried rice, loaded with roughly chopped garlic that cooks down into tender, sweet, fluffy pieces seamlessly incorporated into the grains of rice. Rounded out with classic additions like sliced roast pork, egg, and spring onion, it delivers plenty of punch without leaving a heavy aftertaste, making it easy to finish bowlfuls with ease.

For a substantial lunch or dinner, pairing that rice with ramen in a combination set is a reliable route. The accompanying ramen relies on an old-school soy sauce broth with a clean profile, creating a welcome contrast against the bold flavours of the fried rice. The noodle offerings also extend to tanmen, dandan noodles, and Shanghai fried noodles, while chewy-skinned pan-fried gyoza and various small plates make it easy to spread out a diverse feast across the table.

Seating along the counter places you right next to the energy of the kitchen, creating an easygoing atmosphere that welcomes solo diners dropping by on a whim. Beyond midday lunch, Kokushin stays open until 24:00 late at night, making it just as appealing for an evening of stir-fried dishes over beer capped off with an aromatic bowl of fried rice.
